market

This morning I walked to the city center and met my friend Erika, originally from Seattle (a side note: if you are familiar with the band Death Cab for Cutie, she played cello on their album Stability). She is making curtains for our dining room and for Munchkin’s room, so we went to the fabric market which is open every Saturday, to pick out the material. The dining room is no small feat- we need 20 meters of material! It’s really gorgeous, very simple. For Munchkin’s room we picked white cotton with a beautiful eyelet design. The market is a wonderful part of Utrecht life. Hundreds of people selling and buying gorgeous materials to make things! My mum is a big sewer and I always think she’d go crazy here. I love the market too, because there is such a mix of people: Dutch, Turkish, Moroccan and ‘Others’ (Erika and I fall under this category, haha).

I spotted the yellow fabric above and had to buy a little piece. It’s hand embroidered and I fell in love with it. Not sure what to do with it yet, though.

Never mind the herbal tea and light sandwich for lunch I thought I’d have. Espresso cake and hot chocolate is way better!

  • OMG!! I’d go nuts! How did you choose – they’re all so beautiful!! I must go there… and bring my BAS (big ass suitcase)!!

  • Accent pillows for munchkin!

I would go crazy too, and I can’t sew to save my life!

  • Now that looks like a place I would love to go and be all day! I love that fabric as well and agree with Jen about the pillow!

  • Ahhh…seeing all that fabric just makes my heart sing! Pure heaven for me! Looks amazing!

  • Oh, how I wish we had a market like that near us. I’ve been doing lots of sewing (mostly just hems) and I would have loved a better selection of threads.

  • Sounds like a lot of fun! Wish we had markets like that here. I really love that about other countries. The fabrics in the photos are gorgeous.

  • I’m getting so curious about Munchkin’s room! That fabric is gorgeous.

  • I /am/ familiar with Death Cab for Cutie – our wedding photographer used them as the soundtrack for our slide show… thanks to your friend for the lovely music!

Looking forward to following your blog!
